Latin X Brixton Festival

Latin X Brixton festival brings together vital grassroots organisations with exciting Latinx artists in a weekend of sharing expertise and experiences.

The first Latin X Brixton Festival was June 16 - 18 2023 programmed and led by Co-Creator Valentina Andrade and supported by Brixton BID

Over three days we celebrated British latinX identities in South London. We managed to give access to cultural provisions, as well as creating a community hub within theatre alongside My Uncle is Not Pablo Escobar's 3 week residency at Brixton house. We united a community to tackle structural issues as seen with the conversations we had at The Advocacy Academy on Sunday the 18th with “Fiesta del pueblo”, with La bonita Chola and Save latin village.
During these three empowering days, we heard latinx DJs around brixton, with Dj Coco Mansilla (16th), Dj Tato (17th), Dj Carlos (17th), the streets and buildings were full of culture and vibrancy.
With the help of businesses in Brixton village such as Super cute, Latin Americans felt seen and appreciated. The creation of a mural with “Chota 13” from Medellin Colombia united people from different places to create a beautiful piece of work.
We saw 1st and 2nd generation Latin Americans take up space in Brixton House with workshops delivered by:
Latin Youth Theatre- Theatre workshop and performance
Yara Rodrigues Fowler - Intergenerational creative writing workshop
Empoderando familias- Empoderando Nuestro futuro (creation of mural)
English for Action- Pedagogy of the oppressed: From South America to London
IRMO: Civic Power
Somos Chibchas- Mapalè dance workshop and performance
Super cute- Chota 13 mural creation
Super cute- Art shop
Cecilia Alfonso-Eaton- Multilingual performance workshop
The Advocacy academy- Fiesta del pueblo w/ La bonita chola, save latin village

Alongside these workshops we had a installation in Brixton House's Exhibition space led by NGO Migrants in Action, King’s College London, and People’s Palace Projects, with UKRI funding. The project is worked alongside Latin American Migrant women who have been working as courier girls in London, capturing in their own images and writing their lives on the road, their challenges, and struggles.

Latin X Brixton Festival was a huge success, cementing a relationship with Brixton BID and further events for the Latinx community in Brixton.
